THE GRAPEVINE: Montepulciano and
Trebbiano |
 |
|
|
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Origin and distribution:
Abruzzo autochthonous wine,
present in cultivation since
1700. Also grown in the
neighbouring regions such as
Marche, Molise, Umbria, Puglia
and Lazio.
Throughout the latest 10 years
it has strongly spread after
having been acknowledged for its
remarkable qualities.
Wine features:
Red berry wine; average-big leaf,
pentalobate, dense on the
average bunch having pyramidal
or conic shape, often winged;
slightly ovoid average grape
with pruinose and solid skin,
vigorous on the average.
Oenological features:
Ruby red wine with violet hues,
spiced with cherry, berries and
liquorice perfumes, suitable
both for ageing and as a young
wine.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo
Origin and distribution:
Wine belonging to the great
trebbiani family, closer to
Biancame typology; it is present
nearly only in Abruzzo and in
some other very restricted areas
with different names. In 1994 it
was recorded in the national
catalogue of varieties. In the
past it was mostly mistaken for
white Bombino, even in the
regional DOC check.
Wine features:
White berry wine; big pentagonal
leaf; big more or less winged
grape, solid or very solid
having pyramidal shape, nearly
mixed at times; average or big
yellow-green grape according to
ripening; vigorous.
Oenological features:
Like all trebbiani wines, it is
nearly neutral; dull straw
yellow coloured, typical
perfumes and flavours, but not
very well defined and strong. |
